The monument at the Iris Memorial is approximately 12 feet high, 30 feet long, and 12 feet wide, the sculpture rests on a granite base that has the basic profile of a large wedge. The design suggests the multitudes with 35 life-size bronze figures arranged in clusters of vignettes. Images depicted in the monument depict the misery of the Irish starvation, the Irish emigrating to America by ship and the stepping onto American shores. The faces and figures show the struggle of leaving their homeland and also their of hope in future of freedom and opportunity in the new land. All of the figures are in period dress but are loosely modeled and impressionistic. The figures draw you in to experience the detail and expressions in the faces. A single viewing of sculpture as a whole tells only a portion of the story, so the photos below are meant to concentrate on specific groupings, or individuals so well depicted by the sculptor. 8 kiosks surrounding the sculpture explain the entire journey of the Irish in copy and photographs.
