Though his feet and back were wounded and his father protested to then-U.S. Sen. Hugh Scott that his son was no longer fit for cornbat. Nutter was sent back into battle in Vietnam. He had attended l3ok Vocational High School and worked briefly as a cook before enlisting in the Marine Corps in November 1967. The rifleman died in the Station Hospital in Da Nang, Quang Nam Province, on Oct. 31, 1968, the day President Johnson announced a complete bombing halt of North Vietnam in an effort to get deadlocked peace talks moving. Nutter was fatally wounded after friendly forces mistook his patrol, part of Company A of the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, as the enemy and opened fire. He was 19 years old and engaged to be married. Survivors included his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
