"War is hell and it's getting worse every minute," wrote Newby in his last letter home from Vietnam. In the same letter, he told his youngest sister how to take care of a music box he had sent for her birthday. Newby attended Lincoln High School and worked as a tool and die maker for Bachman Brothers on E. Erie Avenue. The son of a World War II veteran who saw action in the South Pacific, he enlisted in the Marine Corps on Feb. 5, 1965. The lance corporal, a rifleman, was stationed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for five months before being sent to Vietnam and assigned to Company K of the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. Newby died in Quang Nam Province on Aug. 6, 1967. He was 21 years old. Survivors included his mother and three sisters.
