The career Army Special Forces non-commissioned officer graduated from St. Francis Vocational School in 1964. He later attended Pennsylvania Military College and Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Michelli had been stationed in Korea and Europe before being ordered in Vietnam, where the operations sergeant was assigned to Company A of the 5th Special Forces Group. Michelli died on May 3, 1966. The 38-year-old sergeant first class was survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
