McDaniel was the last Marine from Philadelphia to die in Vietnam. He was a 1969 graduate of Bok Vocational High School. Before en-listing in the Marines later that year, be worked for Pennsylvania Bell Telephone Co. He had hoped to go to college, study mechanical engineering and open his own auto repair shop after he returned home from Vietnam. The 20-year-old lance corporal was a combat engineer in Company B of the 1st Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division. McDaniel died on Feb. 9, 1971 in Quang Nam Province. He was survived by his parents, a brother and a sister.
