Johnson enlisted in the Army five days after his June 1965 graduation from Thomas Edison High School. The 18-year-old specialist four, a machine-gunner and team leader, was sent to Vietnam and assigned to Company A of the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry, 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division. Johnson died in Vietnam on Sept. 22, 1966. He was survived by his wife, son and parents.
