The 18-year-old Marine Corps rifleman and fire team leader died in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam, on May 9, 1968, while on a search-and-destroy mission as part of Operation Scotland II. The lance corporal was assigned to Company A of the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. One of a dozen children, Johnson was a 1967 graduate of South Philadelphia High School. He planned to make the Marine Corps his career. Johnson was survived by his mother, six brothers and five sisters.
