Hughie" Elmore grew up at the former St. John's Orphan Asylum. He also had lived at St. Vincent's Orphan Asylum, on Milnor Street, as did Theodore A. Dougherty, another Philadelphian who died in Vietnam. Elmore enlisted in the Army in August 1965 at the age of 17. He spent many weekends, holidays and part of each summer vacation with John J. and Eleanor Quinn, who heard about the boy without a family and welcomed him into their home on N. 61st Street. The ammunition bearer was assigned to Company C of the 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) in Vietnam, where he died on March 25, 1966 at the age of 18.
