The native of Virginia was a clerk-typist for the Philadelphia Water Department when he first enlisted in the Army in 1955. After his discharge in 1957, he became the first black police officer in Fredericksburg, Va. Dyson re-enlisted in 1961, and was later sent to Vietnam, where he was assigned to Company A of the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). The 31-year-old sergeant, a team leader, died on Feb. 23, 1966. He was survived by his wife and two daughters.
