Dixon was an all-around athlete at Murrell Dobbins Vocational High School, and competed on the football, cross country and gymnastics teams before enlisting in the Marine Corps in November 1966. The 18-year-old Private first class, a rifleman, was sent to Vietnam and assigned to Company A of the 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. He died in Quang Tri Province on May 10, 1967. Survivors included his parents and several brothers and sisters.
