Chavous joined the Community Baptist Church at 40th and Spring Garden streets as a youngster, and loved singing in the church choir. He played trumpet in the West Catholic High School band and worked as a porter before entering the Marine Corps in April 1965, two weeks after turning 18. The lance corporal, a fire team leader in Company C of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, died in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam, on October 21, 1967. He was 20 years old.
